Billy Crystal to host Oscars again?

Actor Billy Crystal apparently wants to host the Oscars again. The Los Angeles Times reported that Crystal, who’s hosted eight times, said he was “itchy” to get back in the saddle.

But it’s not official yet. In fact, the Academy won’t even confirm whether there have been talks with the actor.

“It’s always fun. It’s really hard, but maybe one or two more times? I don’t know. They know where I am… I came out last year as a surprise.”-Billy Crystal explained why he wants to return to the stage.

Since Crystal’s last gig in 2004, the Oscars have been hosted by Chris Rock, Jon Stewart (twice), Ellen DeGeneres, Hugh Jackman, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, and Anne Hathaway and James Franco.

As for the audience reaction, perhaps that’s what’s enticing him to return to the stage.

“I did it, and people wanted to see me, they stood up, and I couldn’t talk for about a minute. And, um, I got a little itchy. So we’ll see what happens. I can’t promise anything.”-Billy Crystal explained.

Billy Crystal will present the 2012 Oscars after the departure of Eddie Murphy, the original host. The 63-year-old actor announced he’ll anchor one of TV’s biggest nights via Twitter on Wednesday (09.11.11). Billy Crystal, who has previously hosted the Oscars nine times, said:

“Some of the best moments of my career have happened on the Oscar stage. I am thrilled to be back there. Actually, I am doing this so that the young woman in my pharmacy will stop asking me my name when I pick up my prescription.”

Tom Sherak, the Academy president that puts on the Oscars, called the 2012 host “a comic legend and Oscar icon.” Billy Crystal first hosted the show in 1990 when Driving Miss Daisy was named the year’s best movie, and the awards program was still easily topping 40 million viewers, making it the second-most watched US TV program annually behind professional football’s Super Bowl.

The comedian went on to host three more consecutive years, dropped out for two, then returned in 1997 and 1998 when Titanic was voted by academy members as the top movie and 57 million people tuned in. He last hosted the show in 2004.

And I’m going to wear a powdered sky-blue tuxedo and at the end of the evening, I’m going to urinate on myself in front of a billion people.”-the star said during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

Eddie Murphy also recently spilled details on how he got to be the Oscar host. He said the idea came during a conversation with Tower Heist director Brett Ratner, who will also be producing next year’s Oscar ceremony.

“The conversation came up about who would host and [Ratner] was saying different names,’ recalled Eddie. ‘And I was like, you know, if I hosted that show, it would probably get nice little chatter for our movie before the movie came out — that I was hosting the Oscars. And that’s kind of how it happened.”-Eddie Murphy recalled.

The actor has not hosted an awards show since the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, and says he accepted to be Oscar host because he “never got to it.”
